XS650 Tips, Images, and How To Information:
Various XS650 assembly images and performance / tips "how to" information.
You do not have to cut or open the cam chain to install the cam shaft! It will fit on the sprocket under a brand new cam chain with the pairs of ball bearings removed from each end, the bearings will slide right off each end of the cam. Camshaft Installation TDC Index Timing: Click Here!
Ever wondered where that dipstick measures the indicated oil level?
How to replace the cam chain and its peen type masterlink without the cylinder studs in the way and no slack to work with because your new cam chain is wrapped around the camshaft sprocket in the head. And no worry about grinding particles from the old peened masterlink removal or the new link parts / tools falling in the motor etc. (see below)
With the sump plate off the bottom of the motor you can easily grind off the old master link, then use the new chains link still open to thread the new chain in and around the crank while removing the old chain.
Use something like a solid metal plate (I use the side of Snap-On heavy steel V blocks above) to back up the new master link while you tap and peen the new heads out to perfect rivet heads with a small hammer. No special tools required and it's easy. Lots of room to work with downstairs to!
The starter hole seal edges need to be chamfered just like the counter shaft and the clutch push rod seal do. The sharp crank case edges can cut and ruin the edges of the new seals on installation.
Starter block off plug made from the aluminum starter end you already have! I tapped the center hole to 1/2" NPT Tapered pipe thread and screw in a plug, very simple. An aluminum cap can be welded over it as well. I do not trust rubber automotive type expansion freeze plugs made for water or ethelyene glycol type cooling systems to hold 250° hot engine oil in. See the top image on this page to see the oil level marking on the dip stick located above the starter hole.
